What is a festival?

A festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and centering on some characteristic aspect of that community and its religion or cultures. It is often marked as a local or national holiday, mela, or eid.

​Holi

Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates spring, love, and new life.

Some families hold religious ceremonies, but for many Holi is more a time for fun. It's a colourful festival, with dancing, singing and throwing of powder paint and coloured water. Holi is also known as the "festival of colours".

Diwali

​This festival of lights is celebrated as the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. It is the most widespread Hindu festival rejoiced all across south Asia wherever Hindus live. This festival is not only celebrated by Hindus but also by Jains and Sikhs.

Navratri​

Navratri is one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar.

It's celebrated all over the world, typically falling between September and October during the month of Ashvin, and lasts for nine days.

Nav means nine and Ratri means nights.

Dussehra

Dussehra is a popular Hindu festival that is also known a​s Vijayadashami that celebrates the victory of good over evil. Dussehra is one of the longest festivals in the Hindu traditions which is celebrated for 10 days, starting with 9 nights.

​Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Vinayaka Chavithi, is an auspicious Hindu festival which is celebrated for 10 days every year. The festival is celebrated in the Bhadra month as per the Hindu calendar which generally falls in mid-August to September. It marks the birthday of the beloved elephant-headed Lord Ganesha.

​Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. However, the Holy Bible does not mention the date of the birth of Christ. If some historians are to be considered, Jesus may have been born in the spring.

Makar Sankranti

​India is the land of festivals. Makar Sankranti is one of the important festivals of Hindu religion that they celebrate with great joy and happiness. The festival is celebrated every year on 14 or 15 January depending upon the solar cycle.
