• Led by Martin Luther in 1517.

The Goal of the Reformation

• The Reformation was a movement to reform the Roman Catholic Church.

• Most reformers wanted to change the Catholic Church, instead their efforts led to the creation of separate Protestant Churches.

Martin Luther

• Leader of Protestant Reformation; "Father of the Reformation"

• Wrote the 95 Theses to argue against indulgences.

• Indulgence = buying forgiveness from the Catholic Church

Church reform was based on three ideas:

• 1.People can only win salvation through God.

• 2.All people in the faith are equal.

• 3.All Church teaching should be based on the Bible.
