What we've learned about conjugations so far...

• ​-AR, -ER, and -IR conjugations

• ​The conjugation must agree with the subject

• ​There are some irregular verbs (Ir, Dar, Ser, etc.)

• ​You CANNOT have two conjugated verbs together

Let's review...

Hablar

​Every verb has a stem. The ending changes, but for normal verbs, the stem stays the same.

​Hablamos

Habláis

Hablan ​

Hablar

​HABL is the stem, but the -AR ending changes.

One more time: with normal verbs, the stem never changes.

Only the -AR, -ER, or -IR ending changes.

But several verbs are considered "stem-changing verbs"

​This means that the stem DOES change for certain conjugations. We can remember these conjugations by thinking of a boot. ​

• Today we will look at only one verb: jugar (to play).

• Jugar is a stem-changing verb​

The stem of jugar changes from U -> UE within the boot.

For this to make sense, let's look at a conjugation chart. ​

Yo juego

Tú juegas

Él/ella/usted juega ​

Nosotros jugamos

Vosotros jugáis

Ellos/ellas/ustedes juegan ​

What happened?

• The "U" in "jugar" changed to "UE" for conjugations in the "boot" (which is everything except nosotros and vosotros)

Will it always be like that?

​Not all stem-changing verbs switch from

U -> UE, but they all follow this pattern.

We will look at those other stem-changing verbs next class, but for now, let's get familiar with JUGAR.
