La Hora (Time)

​This lesson will deal with Expressing Time.

​

​Before you start, you need to review Numbers from 0-100. Particularly 0-60.

​Vocabulario to know:

​

​¿Qué hora es? = What time is it?

​La hora = The hour

​El minuto = The minute

​

​A las = At...

​*A la = At... (for 1 o'clock)

​Son las = It is...

​*Es la = It is... (for 1 o'clock)

​

de la mañana = AM / in the morning

​de la tarde = PM / in the afternoon

​de la noche = PM / in the evening / at night

​en punto = o'clock

​mediodía = noon

​medianoche = midnight

​If there are NO MINUTES...

Begin with either:

​a) Son las... (It is...)

​b) A las... (At...)

Then express the hour:

​

​cinco

Since there are NO MINUTES, skip.

Then finish with the appropriate expression:

​

a) de la mañana = AM / in the morning

b) ​de la tarde = PM / in the afternoon

c) ​de la noche = PM / in the evening / at night

At ​​5:00 PM = A las cinco de la tarde.

​If there are minutes between 1 - 29...

Begin with either:

​a) Son las... (It is...)

​b) A las... (At...)

Then express the hour:

​

​cinco

Then express the minutes:

​

​diez

Then finish with the appropriate expression:

​

a) de la mañana = AM / in the morning

b) ​de la tarde = PM / in the afternoon

c) ​de la noche = PM / in the evening / at night

ADD "y"

​

​Important to remember as this doesn't exist in English!!!

At ​​5:10 PM = A las cinco y diez de la tarde.

​If there are exactly 30 minutes...

Begin with either:

​a) Son las... (It is...)

​b) A las... (At...)

Then express the hour:

​

cinco

Then use the expression:

​

media

Then finish with the appropriate expression:

​

a) de la mañana = AM / in the morning

b) ​de la tarde = PM / in the afternoon

c) ​de la noche = PM / in the evening / at night

ADD "y"

​

​Important to remember as this doesn't exist in English!!!

At ​​5:30 PM = A las cinco y media de la tarde.

​If there are minutes between 31-59...

Begin with either:

​a) Son las... (It is...)

​b) A las... (At...)

Then express the hour:

​

​cinco

Then express the minutes:

​

cincuenta

Then finish with the appropriate expression:

​

a) de la mañana = AM / in the morning

b) ​de la tarde = PM / in the afternoon

c) ​de la noche = PM / in the evening / at night

ADD "y"

​

At ​​5:50 PM = A las cinco y cincuenta de la tarde.

​If there are minutes between 31-59...

Begin with either:

​a) Son las... (It is...)

​b) A las... (At...)

Then express the hour PLUS ONE:

​

​seis

Write how many minutes UNTIL the next hour:

​

diez

Then finish with the appropriate expression:

​

a) de la mañana = AM / in the morning

b) ​de la tarde = PM / in the afternoon

c) ​de la noche = PM / in the evening / at night

ADD "menos"

​

At ​​5:50 PM = A las seis menos diez de la tarde.

Noon

It is noon = Es mediodía

Do not add the "las"​

​

At noon = A mediodía

​Do not add the "las"

​

​

Midnight

It is midnight = Es medianoche

Do not add the "las"​

​

At midnight = A medianoche

​Do not add the "las"
