​Review - Waves Transfer Energy

• ​Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

• ​Sound, light, and heat are energy, not matter.

• ​To transfer is to move from place to place.

• Waves transfer energy, but they cannot transfer matter.

​Wave Diagrams

• We can look at a wave diagram to observe the wave's properties.​

• When there is no energy, we see a flat line, called the "Zero Line."

• ​When we add energy, we see a predictable pattern called a wave.

• ​The crest is the highest point.

• ​The trough is the lowest point.

​Amplitude

• ​The distance from the zero line to the crest is called the "Amplitude."

• As energy increases, so does the amplitude.

• ​A wave with a high amplitude carries a lot of energy.

• ​A wave with a low amplitude carries a little energy.

​Wavelength

• ​Wavelength is the distance from one crest to the next crest.

• We can identify the color of a light wave by observing it's wavelength.
