Present Continuous

To show an action taking place at the time of speaking.

​- The dog is chewing on the shoe.

​- We are making a greeting card for my mother.

​- The workers are cleaning the street.

Past Continuous

To describe two actions which were happening in the past at the same time.

​- When I arrived, the police was taking down the details.

​- He was jgging when the dog attacked him.

​- The boys were arguing as she walked in.

Future Continuous

To describe an action which will take place in the future. It is usually used with a time expression.

- We will be sitting on our exam in December.

​- The gardener will be burning the rubbish later.

​- The cat will be giving birth soon.

Present Perfect

To show an action that has just happened or not happened.

- Joseph has just painted the gate.

​- He still hasn't read the book.

To show an action that was completed in the past at a certain time.

- They had already seen the report before the meeting.

​- I told my neighbour what had happened to her cat.

​- The teacher had explained before the rules and regulations.

Future Perfect

To show an action that will be finished by a given future time.

- We will have eaten before he comes home.

​- We will have flown to Paris next week.

​- The soldiers will have reached the camp when the truck arrives.
