The translation of this word is "people marching." Volksmarching was begun in the early 1960s by a German sports club as a running event. It has evolved into what it is today, walking events that occur throughout the year in almost all the picturesque German cities and villages. Each Volksmarch is usually made up of two routes, a 10 km and a 20 km walk. Both day and night marches are held for the walkers. During the night marches, the walkers carry torches to light the way.

​ Walkers begin the course at the starting booth. There they pay dues for a stamp card. Walkers can earn pins by using this card to keep track of kilometers walked. The acquired pins are often placed on the Volksmarcher's vest or traditional Jager hat. The routes are well marked as they wind through quaint towns, aromatic farms, and fairytale forests. Along the way, there are refreshment booths where the participants can enjoy free beverages or hot soup and sit on the nearby benches to catch their breath. Other food is available for purchase. At the completion of the journey are more food, drinks, and entertainment by a traditional German oompah band. Mementos such as mugs, pewter plates, or ceramic figures bearing an inscription of the date and location of the march are given to the walkers at the end of their trip.
