Nilai pH suatu larutan didasarkan :
Banyaknya ion H+
pH = - log [H]+
pOH = - log [OH]-
pKw = pH + pOH
Hubungan antara pH dengan pOH adalah
*Pada suhu 25oC, pKw = 14, jadi pH + pOH = 14.

1. Larutan bersifat netral, jika [H+] = [OH–] atau pH = pOH = 7
2. Larutan bersifat asam, jika [H+] > [OH–] atau pH < 7
3. Larutan bersifat basa, jika [H+] < [OH–] atau pH > 7
