• When writing a definition expository essay, we have three modes we can use to define terms:
• Function • Example • Negation
3
The function strategy demonstrates how the concept/term functions or operates in the real world.
Example of function strategy: A good friend remains loyal even when it feels like it would be easier to turn tail and run. A good friend uses his sense of humor to cheer me up when I am down. A good friend is willing to listen to me pour my heart out, even at three o’clock in the morning.

The example strategy uses examples to help the reader understand your definition. These examples often come from your everyday life, books, film, television, or song lyrics.
Example of example strategy: My friend Bill is an example of a good friend because when I needed help moving, Bill offered to assist without me having to ask. In addition, he listened to me when I needed someone to give me advice about school.
