STARTER.

  • Getting started exercise in Learners book page 67

Give learners 10 minutes to answer the questions in their note book. Swap books after 10 minutes as you discuss the questions as a class.

MAIN ACTIVITY(Open cubes).

  • Learning intentions: To identify and sketch different nets for an open cube.

Resources: Resource sheet 6A, squared paper, pencils, rulers, scissors.

Descriptions: Challenge learners to find and draw all the different pentominoes (shapes that can be made with five squared paper joined along their sides). They should draw them onto squared paper and check that none of the shapes are the same as others when they are rotated or flipped over.

4

MAIN ACTIVITY(Open cubes).

  • An open cube is a cube but with one face missing.

Show learners the pentomino on resource sheet 6A. Cut out the pentomino and fold it along its internal lines to create an open cube. Unfold the shape and explain to learners that because the pentomino folds to make an open cube, it is a net of an open cube. Ask:

Are all pentominoes nets of open cubes?

Which pentominoes are nets of open cubes?

5

MAIN ACTIVITY(Open cubes).

  • Learners investigate which pentominoes are nets of open cubes. They should visualise whether the net will fold up into an open cube and then cut it out and fold it along the lines to check.

    Differentiation:

  • Support less confident learners by providing paper with larger squares so that it is easier for the nets to be handled.

Challenge more confident learners by telling them to write down how to identify which of the pentominoes are nets of open cubes.
