Metaphor
A metaphor suggests that two different things are the same without using "like", "as", or "than." Think name-calling.
He is a bear in the mornings!
He is a cheetah on the track.

Simile
A simile is a comparison of two unlike things using "like", "as", or "than."
He is as tall as a tree.
The water was as smooth as glass.

Alliteration
Alliteration is repeating the same sound in two or more words.
Crazy Kangaroos kissed quietly.
Seven snakes slithered silently.

Hyperbole
An hyperbole is an obvious exaggeration.
I have a ton of homework.
I have told you a million times!

Onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia is a word that sounds like the noise or action it is describing.
The bells jingled.
The jet zoomed across the sky.

Tone
Tone is the mood that the book presents; how it makes the reader feel.
Huge tears fell from her eyes as she saw her dog in such pain. The tone of these words is sadness.

Symbolism
Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas.
The eagle represents freedom in the United States.
Roses represent love.
