​How can we learn to be wise from an owl?

Listen Closely!​

The position of an owl’s ears enable it to hear in three dimensions—up and down, left and right, near and far. If the owl listens closely, it can even identify its prey even when the owl cannot see it.

​

Sometimes we make mistakes because we don’t listen to our parents or pay attention to our teachers. Making good choices starts by listening—instead of ignoring—wise instruction.​

Look Carefully!

Owls also make choices by what they see. They have very large eyes which enable them to see long distances during day or night. In fact, their eyes are so large they cannot move in their sockets! That is why owls turn their heads to look around.

A wise person gets the facts, looks at all the possibilities, asks for advice, and thinks long and hard before making a decision. They also learn from what doesn’t work in order to avoid making the same mistake.

Guard your mouth!

Owls do not have teeth to chew their food, so they must swallow everything whole.​ They must be careful not to put things in their mouths that might harm them.

Similarly, we should be careful about what goes in our mouths — avoid eating, drinking, or breathing things that could harm us. We also need to be careful about what comes out of our mouths — avoid saying things that might harm others.

Think before acting

To ensure their survival, owls think before acting. They listen closely and look carefully to ensure there are no dangers lurking around. They consider the prey so they do not attack what they cannot handle.

Similarly, a wise person thinks carefully before acting. They do not rush into a decision based on their emotions or moment of impulse, but ensure they think through thoroughly and consider their options before taking action.
