Ch 8 Photosynthesis Vocab page 226-235:

atp: the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells

heterotroph:  an organism that consumes other organisms in a food chain.

autotroph: an organism that can produce its own food using light, water, carbon dioxide, or other chemicals.

photosynthesis: the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar

pigment: a coloring matter or substance

chlorophyll:  a pigment that gives plants their green color

thylakoid:  any of the membranous disks of lamellae within plant chloroplasts that are composed of protein and a lipid

Ch 8 Photosynthesis Vocab page 226-235:

stroma: The spongy, colorless matrix of a cell that functionally supports the cell

NADP:  a coenzyme occurring in most living cells and utilized similarly to NAD but interacting with different metabolites.

light-dependent reactions: The light-dependent reactions convert light energy into chemical energy

light-independent reactions: chemical reactions during photosynthesis that convert carbon dioxide and other compounds into glucose, taking place in the stroma.

photosystem:  the functional units for photosynthesis, defined by a particular pigment organization and association patterns.

Ch 8 Photosynthesis Vocab page 226-235:

electron transport chain:  the portion of aerobic respiration that uses free oxygen as the final electron acceptor of the electrons removed from the intermediate compounds in glucose catabolism

ATP synthase: a mitochondrial enzyme localized in the inner membrane,

Calvin cycle:  a process that plants and algae use to turn carbon dioxide from the air into sugar
