​A chessboard is, like its name sounds like, a board where you play chess! Over on the right, we have an example of a chessboard.

​Files and Ranks

​A file is the up-and-down columns on a chessboard. The top-right image shows files a, b, c, d, e, f, g, and h. A rank is the side-to-side rows on a chessboard. The bottom-right image show ranks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.

​Coordinates and Squares

​The coordinates of a chessboard are the little letters and numbers on the bottom and side of the board. To find a square, the name of a square is its coordinate number, for example, if you wanted to find e4, look for file e, and rank 4. Where they meet is the square number.
