The world’s population is young: 42 per cent of people are under the age of 25. In South Asia and Sub‑Saharan Africa, the number of people aged 12–24 has risen to over 525 million. Now, more than half of the people in the world are under 30 years old. In every continent except Europe there are more people under the age of 15 than over the age of 65.In 2018, only 17.3 per cent of the world’s population was over the age of 55.

Young people care about the future! I know that many older people think that young people have badly behaved. They say that young people are losing their values, do not work hard, and break the law. Media headlines often report sensational stories about young people and exaggerate their criminal behavior. But a recent United Nations (UN) report tells a different story. The UN World Youth Report of 2018 highlights that young people want to be involved in shaping the future. The UN says that young people are central to achieving a fair, stable, and sustainable society. Young people want their voices to be heard. They want to make a difference and to make the world a better place. They should not be ignored. After all, they are the future! Recent protest marches about climate change by school children in the UK and Scandinavia are further evidence that young people do care. Extract from a magazine article in Europe in 2019

Poem - Destroying our environment
Broken bottles and sharp pieces of glass
Folded up newspapers thrown on the grass
Pouring out concrete and chopping down trees
This is the environment all around me
Insecticides and chemicals sprayed over food It’s only ourselves that we delude
About the cars that do damage
And the garbage we mismanage
Overfishing, oil spills, and coal mining add to the issue caused by humans, so how to continue?
There has to be something that we can do
Like raise awareness amongst all of you
12
Open Ended
Identify two ways that humans are damaging the environment from Source 1
13
littering
deforestation
pollution
coal mining
oil spills
overfishing
14
Open Ended
Explain one possible course of action an individual might take to reduce the damage caused to the environment.
15
A course of action would be for an individual to take their bottles/glass back to shops. This would ensure that glass containers didn’t end up broken in the streets and in rivers and oceans causing damage to wildlife
16
Open Ended
Which one of these ways do you think is the most damaging and why?
17
Littering is the most damaging. When we carelessly throw away plastic bags and all our rubbish, it has to go somewhere, and often it ends up in drains and then in the river or ocean where it might do damage to wildlife and threaten biodiversity and the ecosystem. This could cause catastrophic damage if everyone in the world were to throw away all their litter whereas oil spills are not an everyday occurrence.
18
Open Ended
Suggest one possible consequence of the environmental damage caused by humans. Explain your answer.
19
Cars emit carbon dioxide in the form of exhaust fumes thereby contributing to global warming. There’s also the oil needed to keep cars moving and drilling for oil has significant environmental consequences as well such building new roads for its transportation, which are often through forests so deforestation is necessary and marine drilling can result in oil spills which kills marine life.
