Figures of speech are words or phrases that depart from straightforward literal language.

A figure of speech is a way of saying a message. Many figures of speech are not meant to be understood exactly as they are said: they are not literal, factual statements.

Figures of speech are often used and crafted for emphasis, freshness, expression, or clarity.

A simile is a comparison between two unlike things using the words "like" or "as."
Examples include:

Eats like a pig
As wise as an owl
