The Role of Media in the Society

  • The intended basic role of media is to inform the general public about events and social issues that affect us.

  • Media can easily change our knowledge, behavior, opinion, preferences, and political views.

  • It has become a powerful tool of communication in the society and has increased the people’s level of awareness of significant events in the country and in the world.

  • These forms of media bring to light both the positive stories in our communities as well as the events that call for our action.

  • Media raises public awareness, encourages people participation in political issues, and promotes transparency among government leaders.

11

Things to remember

    • The human person should look upon media as the possible and powerful instrument of such values.

    • the information provided by the media is at the service of the common good.

    • Media must be used to build and sustain society in its different sectors: economic, political, cultural, and religious dimensions.

    • the one fundamental moral principle that must always apply is that the human person and the human community are the end and means of the use of media and that the good of human beings cannot be attained independently of the common good of the community to which they belong.

    • The first duty of the media users is to be discerning and selective; and the first duty of those who work in the area of social communications in various capacities is to speak the truth.

    • Each one in his own role with his/her own responsibility is called to be vigilant in maintaining a high degree of ethics in communication and to avoid those things that create so much damage, such as disinformation, defamation, and slander.
