Distributive Property

Let's use our notes and practice distributive property!

Review

• The number or variable in front of the parenthesis should be multiplied by EVERYTHING inside the parenthesis.

• The answers should then be added or subtracted depending on what sign is in between the numbers.

• Letters in an equation take the place of an unknown number

• YOU CAN MULTIPLY THE NUMBERS IN FRONT OF LETTERS

• YOU CAN'T ADD NUMBERS AND LETTERS TOGETHER

• Numbers next to each other like this 2(3) means the numbers are multiplying

For the problem 9(4+3)...

• The 9 is outside the parenthesis so this is the number that needs to be multiplied by EVERYTHING inside the parenethesis

For the problem 2(5+3)

• 2 is the number before the () so you will need to multiply it by the 5 and 3

• (2x5)+(2x3)

For the problem 2(3x+1)

• 2 should be multiplied by 3x and 1

• 2(3x) means you multiply the numbers in front of the x

• 2 should then be multiplied by one

• since 6x has an x in it and 2 does not they can't be added.
