​REVIEW: How to Write Scientific Notation

​Scientific Notation has two parts, separated by an x

​

​5.3 x 10⁷

The part before the x: The part after the x:​

​A number greater A power of 10

than or equal to 1,

​but less than 10

​The first part

• ​Must be a number between 1 and 10

• ​It can equal 1, but must be less than 10

​The second part

• Will be a power of 10

• ​BIG numbers will have a positive exponent

• ​small numbers will have a negative exponent

​Steps to put a number in scientific notation:

• ​Move your decimal to a place where your number is between 1 and 10

• Count the number of spaces you moved, that becomes your exponent​

​You also need to know your units...

​be aware...

• ​While m³ would be the SI unit for volume, it CAN also be measured in cm³ or mm³, etc.

• Just know if they are asking for the SI unit for length, area, or volume, it would be m, m², and m³.

• ​But if you are just being asked for an appropriate unit to measure that quantity in, it could have an prefix attached to it (for example: mm, mm², and mm³).
