​- Dùng để diễn tả một hành động đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ.

​Ex: At 3 p.m yesterdady, I was sleeping at home.

​- Diễn tả một hành động đang xảy ra thì có một hành động khác xen vào.

​Ex: When we were playing football, it rained.

* Notes

Với 2 hành động ở trong quá khứ ta xét 3 trường hợp:

​- 2 hành động cắt ngang:

​+ Hành động cắt: Quá khứ đơn

​+ Hành động bị cắt: Quá khứ tiếp diễn

​- 2 hđ xảy ra song song (cùng diễn ra): Quá khứ tiếp diễn

​- 2 hđ kế tiếp (hành động 1 kết thúc -> hành động 2 xảy ra): Quá khứ đơn.
