​What do all modal verbs have in common?

• ​Modal verbs don’t add -s for the third person singular, so the form is always the same.

For example, She can swim.

NOT

She can swims.

• ​The question form is created by inverting the subject and the verb. For example, Will you go?

​

• ​We make the negative form by adding ‘not’. For example, They couldn’t attend the meeting.

• ​They are followed by the verb without ‘to’. For example, "We might watch a movie." 

We don't say; "We might to watch a movie."

• ​They don’t have an infinitive form. When necessary we use another word.

For example, 

She would like to be allowed to arrive ten minutes late. 

May and might are modal verbs that can have a similar meaning. They can be used to describe several ideas:

#1 RULE:

• ​Possibility/ Prediction (in the past, present & future)

​Example:

• ​It may rain later on, so take an umbrella.

​#2 RULE:

​#Permission

​When we ask and give permission we often use may as an alternative to can.

​Example:

​May I come in?

Unlike any other modal verbs, we can't use short form for the negative form of may and might.​

​Positive form: May/ Might

​Negative form: May not/ Might not

*We don’t use don’t / doesn’t /didn’t with may ​

Examples:​

Positive Statement:​

-It may be possible for him to get home tonight.

-This may hurt you.

Negative Statement:

-We may not have enough information at the moment.

Not: We don’t may have enough information at the moment.
