Radikal bebas ialah atom atau molekul yang kekurangan satu elektron yang menjadikan atom atau molekul tersebut tidak stabil, reaktif dan cenderung untuk menyerang atom atau molekul lain.

Proses pengoksidaan ialah tindak balas kimia yang berlaku apabila suatu bahan tindak balas mengalami kehilangan elektron.
Proses pengoksidaan yang berlaku secara semula jadi di dalam badan menghasilkan radikal bebas.
Keadaan ini mencetuskan tindak balas berantai untuk menghasilkan lebih banyak radikal bebas.
