Ruthorford and the Nuclear model

​Ernest Rutherford, was a New Zealand-born British physicist who came to be known as the father of nuclear physics.

​He introduced the Nuclear model of the atom in 1911.

​The Nuclear Model

​Rutherford's atomic model became known as the nuclear model. In the nuclear atom, the protons and neutrons, which comprise nearly all of the mass of the atom, are located in the nucleus at the center of the atom. The electrons are distributed around the nucleus and occupy most of the volume of the atom

​Limitations to the Nuclear Model

• This atomic model failed to explain stability of atoms.

• According to the model, electrons revolve around the positively charged nucleus.

• This model of atom also failed to explain the existence of definite lines in the hydrogen spectrum.

​Advantages of the Nuclear model of the atom

​1) rutherford discovered the prescence of nucleus in atom by his experiment.

2) Rutherford assumed that most of the atom is hallow and small centre point called nucleus.

3) he imagined that electrons revolve around nucleus like planets around sun.
