Who were Knights?

Knights were the mounted soldiers of the medieval world.

​

In general, knights needed to have a good deal of wealth, since a full suit of armor and a horse cost a small fortune.

​

Knights were usually vassals of more powerful lords.

• ​At age 7, a young boy would leave home to live at the castle of a lord.

• In addition to learning how to ride horses and about faith,he spent a good deal learning how sing, dance, and compose music from the ladies whom he served in the castle.

​​Squire (around 14 yrs old)

• ​Squires spent much of their time serving their knight, who was his lord.

• ​This included, cleaning, taking care of the knight's horse, acting as a servant.

• ​Squires also trained with swords and lances (spears) that were 15 feet long.

​Chivalry

​Code of ideal behavior, which included bravery, loyalty, and respect for women.

Knights were also expected to:

1. ​Be loyal to the Church and to their lord

2. ​To be just and fair, protect the helpless.
