1. Kebanyakan Verbs (Kata Kerja/Perbuatan)
Kebanyakan kata kerja hanya perlu ditambah -ing di bahagian belakang perkataan
Contoh :
walk - walking
sleep - sleeping
eat - eating

2. Verbs yang berakhir dengan huruf e
Jika verb berakhir dengan satu huruf -e, buang huruf e tersebut dan tambah -ing
Contoh :
make - making
smile - smiling
write - writing

3. Verbs yang berakhir dengan huruf ie
Jika verb berakhir dengan satu huruf -ie, tukar -ie dengan -y dan tambah -ing
Contoh :
lie - lying
tie - tying
die - dying

4. Verbs yang berakhir dengan huruf konsonant selepas huruf vokal
Bagi verb yang berakhir dengan huruf konsonan dan sebelum huruf konsonan tersebut adalah huruf vokal (a.e.i.o.u), gandakan huruf vokal tersebut dan tambah -ing. Peraturan ini terkecuali bagi perkataan yang berkakhir dengan huruf w/x/y
Contoh :
run - running
swim - swimming
stop - stopping
