​Medieval Monasteries

• Augustine and the men who went with him to Britain were monks.

• Monks were men who promised to spend the rest of their lives praying, working and studying the Bible. ​

• ​Minks lived together in buildings called MONASTERIES.

• They went to church eight times a day to pray and worship.

• ​They worked in garden, helped with cooking, cleaning and laundry.

• ​Some are also carpenters, doctors, teachers

• ​There were monasteries all through out the lands of the Roman Empire.

• ​Italy, Spain, Africa and all other countries that had once belonged to Rome.

• ​Some Anglo-Saxons learned about Christianity and some wanted to be monks to so they built monasteries in England as well.

• ​Monks were not allowed to eat butter on their bread unless it was Christmas or some other special day.

• ​Monks were also not allowed to eat the meat of a four-legged animal.

• ​Monks were not allowed to speak at their meals.
