​Our Targets

• ​We will analyze how authors create characters using their speech, thoughts, actions, effects of others, and looks (STEAL).

Direct Characterization

When the author tells you exactly what they want you to know.

(EX: Carl was elated because he found a herd of llamas in his back yard this morning.)​

​Indirect Characterization

• ​Authors mostly create their characters by giving us hints about who they are rather than telling us clearly using these tools:

• ​Speech

• ​Thoughts

• ​Effect on Others

• ​Actions

• ​Looks

​1. In your groups, you will read one chapter together.

​2. Then you will discuss how the author created his characters using direct and indirect tools (STEAL).

​3. Give examples of each tool from your chapter.
