​1. Parts of plants

• ​You have learnt the basic parts of plants in Year 1.

• ​In year 3, you should know about - shoot and bud

A plant bud

​Shoot and bud

• ​A shoot refers to the parts of plant above the ground.

• ​Therefore a shoot consist of the stem, leaves and flowers

• ​

• ​A bud is a growing part of a plant that will become a flower or a leaf

Roots

• The roots usually grow in the direction of gravity and water.​

• There are two functions of the roots:

  • ​To anchor the plant to the ground

  • ​To absorb water and nutrient from the soil

Stem

• The stem supports the plants.

• ​It grows tall and spread out into branches.

• ​It enables the leaves to trap get sunlight.​

• ​The stem transports water and nutrients from the root system to the shoot system.

• ​It transports food from the leaves to the other parts of plants

​Leaves

• ​Leaves make food for the plants.

• ​They contains chlorophyll, a green pigment that traps sunlight.

• They make food through photosynthesis and produce oxygen.

• ​If a leaf does not get enough sunlight, it will turn yellowish

​Flower

• ​A flower is the reproductive organ of a plant.

• ​It produces fruits and seeds after fertilisation

• ​Flowers have bright colours and sweet smell to attract insects.

• ​Insects help the reproduction of plants

​The uses of plants

• ​Besides producing oxygen, plants have many uses:

  • ​Making food: - fruits and vegetables

  • ​

• ​Making medicines

  • ​Ginseng

  • ​Foxglove

  • ​Aloe vera

​The uses of plants

• Making perfumes

  • ​Lavender

  • ​Rose

  • ​Frangipani

• ​Making objects

  • ​Cotton

  • ​Rubber

  • ​Timber

Photosynthesis

• ​Photosynthesis happen in the leaves.

• Plants need sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to make food.

• ​Plants produce sugar and oxygen from photosynthesis

What happened when plants do not get their needs?

• ​Lacking sunlight causes plant to turn yellowish

• Plants withers/wilts without enough water

• ​Sometimes, plants can turn brownish this could be because:

  • ​Not enough or too much water

  • ​Lacking nutrients

  • ​The soil has too much salt
