1. Should + ( Simple )

  Pattern  :

  Should + Verb ( base form of verb / infinitive

  a. Function : To give advice, suggestion, and recommendation. It means we say the right or correct thing to do. We use this form to state obligation for the present and the future.

  Example     : You are to fat. You should go on diet.

b. Function : To express obligation, but is not as strong as “must”

Example     : You should pay attention to the teacher’s explanation

c. Function : To express situation likely in the present

Example      : Andi should be at home. Meet him now !

Function :  To predict situation in the future

Example     :  You have checked in the doctor. You should be fine tomorrow

​

Function : To advice someone not to do something because it is bad or wrong.

Example     : You shouldn’t cheat in the exam.

  Pattern :

   

  Should + Be + Verb. ing

Function : To express the idea  that subject is not fulfilling their obligation or is not acting sensibly.

Example     : You should studying Math now. We will have a quiz tomorrow.

3. Should + ( Perfect )

Pattern :

Should + Have + Verb 3

​

Function  : To express an action or idea that you didn’t fulfill the obligation in the past.

Example   : You should have done your homework as soon as possible when you remembered it.

We usually use modal verbs to express obligation or necessity. The following are modal verbs used.

1.    Have to ( 100 % obligation )

2.    Must     ( 100 % obligation )

3.    Should  (  50 %  obligation )​
