​POVERTY AND DISEASES

Poverty is defined as the inability to afford minimum human needs like food, clothing, housing, education and health.

A Disease is an illness or sickness with specific, well defined symptoms that affects a person.

​RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POVERTY AND DISEASES

​Have you ever wondered why poverty (the inability to provide for oneself and one's family) and diseases are related? Here's why;

​Poverty is a major cause of ill health, without the presence of money, there would be a barrier to accessing health care when needed.

This relationship is financial: the poor cannot afford to purchase those things that are needed for good health, including sufficient quantities of medicines or quality food and health care.

​CAUSES OF POVERTY IN NIGERIA

  • ​Poor infrastructure

  • ​Lack of provision of proper healthcare facilities

  • ​Government's corruption

  • ​Poor access to education

  • ​Unemployment

WAYS OF TACKLING POVERTY AND DISEASES​

1)    Creating more jobs

2)    Investment in education.

3)    Micro-financing (supply of loans, savings and other basic financial services )

4)    Transparency in Government

5)    Access to healthcare

6)    Provision of infrastructure

7)    Coordinated social intervention programmes. E.g. N-power, Growth Economic Enhancement Programme (GEEP).​
