Combustion Reactions
a fuel reacts with oxygen and releases heat
this fuel can be a number of things, we often see a hydrocarbon
also known as 'burning'
complete or incomplete
general form = fuel + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water
just have to balance!
5
Metal + Oxygen
Will always give us a metal oxide
then just have to balance it
also known as corrosion (sometimes!)
6
Corrosion Reactions
a specific metal oxide reaction
when a metal is exposed to oxygen and/or water
changes the metal into a more stable form, with a protective 'layer' on top to prevent more exposure to the air
7
Multiple Choice
Propane is burned with a blue flame
propane + oxygen --> carbon dioxide + water
propane + carbon dioxide --> oxygen + water
propane + oxygen --> carbon monoxide + water
8
Multiple Select
Hydrocarbon fuel + oxygen ----> ___+____
(Select 2)
CO2
O2
H2O
CxHy
9
Multiple Choice
Write a Balanced Equation for this reaction: C2H4 + 2 O2 -->
C2O2 + H4
CO2 + HOH
CO + H
2 CO2 + 2H2O
10
Solutions and Solubility
solutions are where a solute is dissolved in a solvent
soluble = are able to be dissolved
insoluble = unable to be dissolved
Precipitation reactions are where two solutions are mixed together, and form an insoluble solid
11
Precipitation Reactions
Often double displacement reaction
aqueous solution + aqueous solution --> aqueous solution + insoluble solid
all you have to do is swap around the reactants to make the products, taking note of the charge
AB + CD --> AD + CB
12
13
Determining the Precipitate
Precipitate = the insoluble solid
USE YOUR DATA SHEET!!!!!!
14
Multiple Choice
In writing the chemical equation for a precipitation reaction, what abbreviation of the physical state must appear with one of the products?
(s)
(g)
(l)
(w)
15
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is insoluble in water?
Barium Sulfate
Strontium Sulfate
Silver Sulfate
Sodium Sulfate
16
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is soluble in water?
Magnesium hydroxide
Beryllium hydroxide
Potassium hydroxide
