DNA REPLICATION

DNA dependent DNA Polymerase

It catalyses polymerisation of deoxynucleotides at the speed of 2000 base pairs per second

DNA polymerase

DNA polymerase creates DNA from nucleotides. It reads the existing DNA strands to create two new strands that match the existing ones. This enzyme is needed every time a cell divides so that one copy of DNA can be passed to each daughter cell.

DNA template strand with 3’ - 5’ polarity and synthesis of DNA is continuous. on the other strand with polarity 5’-3’;synthesis is discontinuous requiring an RNA primer. short stretches of DNA called okazaki fragments are synthesised.

Process of DNA replication

Replication cannot be initiated in any random part of DNA. Region in a DNA where replication initiates is termed as ‘Origin of Replication’.
