What is a map?
A diagrammatic representation of an area of land or sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.

More advantages of Maps.
They can be rolled or folded.
They are easy to carry.
They show places and landforms in detail.
They are more useful than globes.

Landforms
Landforms are features on the Earth's surface that make up the terrain, such as mountains, valleys, plains, or plateaux. They also include coastal features, such as peninsulas or bays, and underwater features, such as ocean basins and mid-ocean ridges.

Gerardus Mercator was the first to publish a collection of maps in a form of book called atlas.

Language of Maps- It is a language of maps used to understand the map. Types of Languages-
Direction defined as the path that something takes, the path that must be taken to reach a specific place, the way in which something is starting to develop or the way you are facing. An example of direction is when you go right instead is called the east.
The ratio between two places and the actual distance, known as the scale of a map. Imagine if the distance between Surat and Delhi is 604 km, and if 100 km defines 1 cm, then the distance between is 6 cm on the map.
The signs and symbols used in a map called as Conventional symbols. A map is a representation or a drawing of the earth's surface or a part of it drawn on a flat surface according to a scale.
A key or legend is a list of symbols that appear on the map. For example, a church on the map may appear as a cross, a cross attached to a circle, a cross attached to a square. … The symbol Sch means school. Symbols and colors can also represent different things like roads, rivers, and land height.

Types of Map- political and physical map
The political map shows boundaries, cities, states, countries while physical map shows physical features called landforms such as mountains, plateaus, plains etc.
