Metals and Non metals

metals react with O₂ and form metal oxide. metal oxides are basic in nature.

Non- Metal react with O₂ and form non-metal oxide. Non- metal oxides are acidic in nature.

Ex. Metal- 4Na + O₂ = 2 Na₂O ( NaOH)

Ex. Non- metal S + O₂ = SO₂ ( H₂SO₄)

Metals and metal oxides react with water to form metal hydroxide. these are basic in nature.

Potassium and sodium are very reactive in water (cold). Mg does not react with cold water but reacts with hot water or steam.

2 Na + 2 H₂O = 2 NaOH + H₂

Non metals do not react with water.

Metals + acid = Metals salt + Hydrogen gas

Zn + H₂SO₄ = ZnSO₄ + H₂

Non metals do not react with acids

Metal + base = Metal salt + hydrogen gas

Non metal reacts with base and form complex salts.
