'A' means one and used with singular countable nouns only. Examples: a cat(cat is singular).

'A' is used with nouns beginning with the letters (b,c,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,m,n,p,q,r,s,t,v,w,x,y,and z) sounds. Examples: a house, a girl, a river, a uniform(yuniform).

'A is used when we speak of a person, animal or thing said for the first time.

'An' means one.

'An' is used with nouns beginning with vowel (a,e,i,o,u) and silent 'h' sounds. Examples: an ant, an egg, an igloo, an octopus, an umbrella.

Examples of silent 'h': an hour, an honest.

to show a noun that is unique or one of its kind. Examples: the sun, the moon, the earth.

when we speak the same thing again. Example: I saw a bird on the mango tree this morning, The bird flew away when it saw me.

to refer to a particular noun. Example: The water in the river behind my house is clean and cold.

with the superlatives. Example: The Petronas Towers is the tallest building in Malaysia.

used with uncountable nouns like water,rice and milk. Example: Ali does not like milk.

used in before nouns like name of places, towns, streets and states. Example: I come from Sungai Petani, Kedah.
