subtract 12 from both sides

x + 12 - 12 = 20 -12

x = 8

divide both sides by 6

 $\frac{6b}{6}=\frac{30}{6}$  

b = 5

To solve an equation we need to use the inverse operations.

These are: add <=> subtract

2x = 10

 $\frac{2x}{x}=\frac{10}{2}$  

x = 5

we always add or subtract to get rid of the number before multiplying or dividing by the coefficient of x

4x + 1 -1 = 21 -1

4x = 20

 $\frac{4x}{4}=\frac{20}{4}$  

x = 5

2x + 5 -5 = 12 - 5

2x = 7

 $\frac{2x}{2}\ =\ \frac{7}{2}$  

x = 3.5

Expand first

3x - 6 = 18

3x - 6 +6 = 18 +6

3x = 24

 $\frac{3x}{3}\ =\ \frac{24}{3}$  

x = 8
