Quadratic Functions

  • A quadratic function is any function that can be placed in the form  y=ax2+bx+cy=ax^2+bx+c  , where  a0a\ne0  but b and c can be 0

  • Quadratic functions have the shape of a parabola (U-shaped graph)

3

Quadratic Functions (cont.)

  • The parabola of a quadratic function will open upwards if  a>0a>0

  • This type of a quadratic will have a minimum y-value

4

Quadratic Functions (cont.)

  • The parabola of a quadratic function will open downwards if   a<0a<0

  • This type of parabola will have a maximum value

Multiple Choice

Is the following function a quadratic function?

 y=12x2x3+9y=\frac{1}{2}x^2-x^3+9

1

Yes

2

No

7

Multiple Choice

Does the following quadratic function open up or down?

 y=7x2y=7-x^2

1

Opens Down

2

Opens Up

8

Shifting Parabolas

  • Vertex Form:  f(x)=a(xh)2+kf\left(x\right)=a\left(x-h\right)^2+k

  • a is the leading coefficient

  • h is the horizontal shift (opposite of what you see)

  • k is the vertical shift

  • Vertex:  (opposite of h, k)\left(opposite\ of\ h,\ k\right)

9

Multiple Choice

Identify the vertex of the following quadratic function:

 y=5(x+6)28y=5\left(x+6\right)^2-8

1

 (6,8)\left(6,-8\right)

2

 (6,8)\left(6,8\right)

3

 (6,8)\left(-6,-8\right)

4

 (6,8)\left(-6,8\right)

10

Axis of Symmetry

  • Parabolas are symmetrical!

  • Axis of Symmetry Formula:  x=b2ax=-\frac{b}{2a}

  • You can use this formula to find the vertex

11

Multiple Choice

Find the axis of symmetry for the following quadratic:  y=x2+6x7y=x^2+6x-7

1

 x=6x=-6

2

 x=3x=3

3

 x=6x=6

4

 x=3x=-3

12

Stretching Parabolas

  • If  a>1a>1  , then the parabola is stretched

  • The larger the value of a, the more stretched the parabola is

13

Compressing Parabolas

  • If  0<a<10<a<1  , then the parabola is compressed

  • Compressed parabolas are wider

Zeros of Quadratics

  • Find the zeros of quadratics algebraically by factoring

  • Make sure to set each part of the factored quadratic equal to 0

16

Multiple Choice

Find the zeros of the following quadratic by factoring:  y=x27x+10y=x^2-7x+10

1

 x=7, 10x=7,\ 10

2

 x=2, 5x=2,\ 5

3

 x=2, 5x=-2,\ -5

4
