1860 Presidential Hopefuls

• Democrats nominated two people.....

  • ....northern's sent Stephen A. Douglas ((he wanted popular sovereignty))

  • ....southern's sent Breckinridge ((he wanted to keep slaveholder's rights))

• Republicans sent Lincoln

South Carolina's Response

• December 1860... South Carolina secedes because:

  • State's sovereign (could leave @ will)

  • Trust issues

  • Rights of states to abolish a destructive government (Declaration of Independence)

• Out of these three reasons, which is the best for leaving the Union?

  • Non-slave States causing 'problems'....What problems are they referring too?

Begin the Confederacy

• Lincoln tried to keep the Union together

• Jan - Feb 1861 six states secedeed

• southern states new constitution:

  • guarantee slavery

  • President 6 yr term

  • no protective tariffs

  • no government funding for internal improvements
    Why would the south have these items in their Constitution?
