It is a dependent clause that has either a preposition, a conjunction or a connector at the beginning of it.

When the subject of the independent clause is the same as the subject of the adverbial clause, you may delete the subject of the adverbial clause.

Then, you change the verb into its gerund form.

Ernest went to the door before he took the call.

Ernest went to the door before taking the call.
