Sentence Rythm

You’ve probably been told about the importance of reading your written work aloud. The advantage of doing so is that you’ll hear which words you’ve emphasized in your writing. If you note that something doesn’t sound right, your hesitance might be due to a disrupted or unhelpful rhythm.

The rhythm of sentences is closely tied to their two-part structure (subject and predicate) and to the known–new contract.

The common cold is caused by a virus.

Barbara wrecked her motorcycle.

Not every sentence has end focus. The speaker can easily stress the new information
