2

Lesson Objectives:

  • Review inverse operations

  • Combine like terms to solve Multi step Equations

  • I can do it when... I can solve  7k+6−5k=07k+6-5k=0

3

Fill in the Blanks

Review: solve for x.

 x−2=4x-2=4

Type answer...

4

Open Ended

How did you solve for x? (what did you do mathmatically to get x alone?)

 x−2=4x-2=4

5

Fill in the Blanks

Review: solve for x.

 3x=93x=9

Type answer...

6

Open Ended

How did you solve for x? (what did you do mathmatically to get x alone?)

 3x=93x=9

7

Summary: Inverse Operations

  • Inverse operations undo each other

  • addition and subtraction are inverse operations

  • multiplication and division are inverse operations

  • We use inverse operations to solve equations

8

Fill in the Blanks

Example 1:

Simplify.

 3p+4p−2p3p+4p-2p

Type answer...

9

Open Ended

How did you simplify this expression?
 3p+4p−2p3p+4p-2p

10

Combining Like Terms

  • When we simplified 3p+4p−2p3p+4p-2p  we added coefficients (the numbers in front of the variables).

  • We call this "combining like terms"

  • When solving multistep equations, our first step is to combine like terms.

11

Fill in the Blanks

Example 2:

Solve the equation.

 3x+4x−5=93x+4x-5=9

Do I have any like terms? If so, what are they?

Type answer...

12

Multiple Choice

Example 2:

Solve the equation.

 3x+4x−5=93x+4x-5=9

What does my new equation look like after combining like terms?

1

 34x−5=934x-5=9

2

 7x−5=97x-5=9

3

 2x=92x=9

13

Multiple Choice

Example 2:

After combining like terms, my equation is:
 7x−5=97x-5=9

Now we are going to use our inverse operations to isolate the variable (get x alone).   The next step is...

1

add 5 to both sides

2

subtract 5 from both sides

3

divide both sides by 7

4

multiply both sides by 7

14

Multiple Choice

Example 2:

We needed to add 5 to both sides, so our new equation is
 7x=147x=14

Again, we are going to use our inverse operations to isolate the variable (get x alone).   The next step is...

1

add 5 to both sides

2

subtract 5 from both sides

3

divide both sides by 7

4

multiply both sides by 7

15

Fill in the Blanks

Example 2:

 7x=147x=14

Solve for x.

16

Multiple Choice

Example 3:

 2a−5a−6=32a-5a-6=3

After combining like terms, my equation is...

1

 −7a−6=3-7a-6=3

2

 −3a−6=3-3a-6=3

3

 3a−6=33a-6=3

4

 7a−6=37a-6=3

17

Fill in the Blanks

Example 3:

After combining like terms, our new equation is...

 −3a−6=3-3a-6=3

Solve for a (use your inverse operations to isolate the variable).

Example 4:

 6y−3+8=176y-3+8=17

Do I have any like terms? If so, what are they?

Type answer...

19

Multiple Choice

Example 4:

 6y−3+8=176y-3+8=17

My like terms are -3 and 8.  After combining like terms, my new equation is...

1

 6y+5=176y+5=17

2

 6y−5=176y-5=17

3

 6y−11=176y-11=17

20

Fill in the Blanks

 Example 4:

My new equation is

 6y+5=176y+5=17

Solve the equation (isolate the variable).
