Indices or Exponents

Recall the definition for index or exponents.
Identify and use an index of a number.
Differentiate between expressions such as  x2x^2  and   2x2x

Differentiate between  xa x^{a\ } +  xbx^b   and  xa x^{a\ }  x   xbx^b  .
Establish and use the rule  xax^a  x  xbx^b  =  xa+bx^{a+b}
Establish and use the rule   xax^a   ÷\div   xbx^b  =  xa−bx^{a-b}

Multiple Choice

2x and x2 are these terms the same?

1

Yes

2

No

3

Multiple Select

What does 2x mean?

1

 x×xx\times x

2

 x+xx+x

3

 x2x^2

4

 2×x2\times x

4

Xa + xb

  • What does xa + xb means ?

  • Let us use x2 + x3 as an example

  • Recall that only like terms may be added or subtracted. Since both terms have different exponents this algebraic expression cannot be simplified any further.

 xa×xbx^a\times x^b

  • Let us use  x2 ×x3x^{2\ }\times x^3  as our example

  • then we have  x×x×x×x×xx\times x\times x\times x\times x

  • Count the number of times x is used in the multiplication as a factor.

  • Express in exponent or index form is  x5x^5

  • We conclude that: x2×x3=x2+3 =x5x^2\times x^3=x^{2+3\ }=x^5 . This is the rule for multiplication
