Same Sex Marriage: What's the Issue?
3
Same-sex marriage has become a major national issue, pitting religious and social conservatives against gay-rights advocates and their allies. Supporters of same-sex marriage contend that gay and lesbian couples should be treated no differently than their heterosexual counterparts and that they should be able to marry like anyone else. Also, they should be able to benefit from the sharing of health and pension benefits to hospital visitation rights. Social conservatives and others who oppose same-sex unions assert that marriage between a man and a woman is the bedrock of a healthy society because it leads to stable families and, ultimately, to children who grow up to be productive adults. They predict, giving gay couples the right to marry will ultimately lead to granting people in polygamous and other nontraditional relationships the right to marry as well.

View of Group #1
Marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Oppose same-sex marriage.
Support the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), passed in 1996, which affirms the right of states not to recognize same-sex marriages licensed in other states.
Requiring citizens to sanction same-sex relationships violates moral and religious beliefs of millions of Christians, Jews, Muslims and others, who believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman.
6
View of Group #2
Marriage is the union of people who love each other. It should be legal for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals, to ensure equal rights for all.
Support same-sex marriage. Opposed to the creation of a constitutional amendment establishing marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
All individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation, have the right to marry. Prohibiting same-sex citizens from marrying denies them their civil rights.
