- Describe an action, event, at a specific time or a period of time in the past.

Ex: I went shopping yesterday.

- Describe actions that happened consecutively in the past.

Ex: I came home, had dinner and watched TV.

- Expressing a habit in the past last night (no longer

maintained and existed).

Ex: I used to play soccer with my friends when I was young.

* We add "-ed" after the verb:

-Usually we add "ed" after the verb: For example: Watch - watched / turn - turned/ want - wanted/ attached - attached/...

- The verb ends in "e" -> we just need to add "d":

For example: type – typed/ smile – smile/ agree – agreed

-Verbs with ONE syllable, ending with ONE consonant, before the consonant is ONE vowel -> we double the last consonant and add "-ed".

For example: stop – stopped/ shop – shopped/ tap – tapped/...

(!) Exception for some words that do not apply that rule: commit – committed/ travel – traveled/ prefer – preferred

Verbs ending in "y":

+ If "y" is preceded by ONE vowel (a,e,i,o,u), we add "ed".

Example: play – played/ stay – stayed

+ If "y" is a consonant (remaining) before, we change "y" to "i + ed".

Example: study – study/ cry – cry

In the past simple tense, you would easily notice signs:

-In the sentence, there are words like: yesterday, ago, last (week, year, month), in the past, the day before, with the time period passed in the day (today, this morning, this afternoon).

-After the phrases: as if, as if, now is the time, if only, wish, would sooner/rather

Example 1: Yesterday morning, Tom got up early; then he ate breakfast and we went to school.

Example 2: Tom lived in Vietnam for six years, now he lives in Paris.

Example 3: The plane took off two hours ago.
