Feelings on Missouri Entering the Union

• Northerner, "Congress should have the power to stop slavery."

• Southerner, "New states should have the same freedoms as the original 13 states."

• Based on the above comments, why was there a problem with whether or not to make slavery legal?

Missouri Compromise (1820)

• Missouri a slave state....Maine a free state

• Every new territory north of the 36 30' latitude line would be free
