a memory of events prior to the start of the story.

Dreams are also considered flashbacks.

Flashbacks have deeper meanings because they give context or insight into current events.

Pg 40. - Percy remembers an incident in 3rd grade where a man in a black trench coat stalked him. Also, in preschool he killed a snake when it slithered into his cot.

Pg 41 - Percy dreams of a white horse and a golden eagle fighting on the beach. While they are fighting, the ground laughs, egging them on. He runs to try and stop it but wakes up.
