China and Japan

In 1949, Communism came to China and was led by Mao Zedong

Communism: The government controls most aspects of society, including economy

Lack of democracy and human rights are a major concern

Official Name of China: People's Republic of China

Economy: Government supports and regulates the market

Globalization: The US makes products in other countries and ships them back to the US

Japan is made up of a series of islands, called an Archipelago

Mountainous terrain- less land to farm and build on

Due to large population and small land mass, Japan has limited land for building

Japan is located along the Ring of Fire, making the islands prone to tectonic activity such as: Volcanoes, Earthquakes, and Tsunamis

Monsoons

In 2011, an earthquake caused a tsunami to hit Japan, and caused a level 7 nuclear meltdown

Japan lacks natural resources because it is a chain of islands with a mountainous terrain and little land area

Terraced Farming: sustainable agriculture, allows farming on mountainsides

Trade Surplus: Japan earns more money from exporting goods than imports

Buddhism is the primary religion

Main Beliefs: Karma, Dharma, and Reincarnation

Belief in nonviolence

Non-theistic- do not believe in a god or gods

Buddha was actually not viewed as a god

China is the world's most populated country with 1.4 billion people

High population density

To slow population growth, China instated the "One Child Policy", which was overturned in 2015 allowing families to have 2 children

Because of the dense population with little land mass, people have to adapt to or modify their environment
