What is sculpture?
Sculpture is the art of making two- or three-dimensional representative or abstract forms, especially by carving stone or wood or by casting metal or plaster.

What exactly are sculptures?
You could think of them as art in 3D (three dimensions). Sculptures can be made by carving, modeling or placing materials together. They can be made out of stone, wood, clay or any other material the artist wants to use! You are going to use a 3D printer to make yours so we have some things to consider first .

Traditional sculpture:
Additive Process: the sculptor builds the work, adding material as the work progresses. Modelling, construction, and assemblage are additive processes.
Subtractive Process: the sculptor begins with a mass of material larger than the finished work and removes material, or subtracts from that mass until the work achieves its finished form. Carving is a subtractive process.

Spring, Barbara Hepworth
This artwork is called Spring. Dame Barbara Hepworth based many of her sculptures on shapes found in nature. She was inspired by pebbles, shells, cliffs and the sea. She was interested, not only in how a sculpture looks, but how it feels and even how it smells. If this sculpture smelt like spring, what would it smell like?
