Today we will identify the main
characters and supporting characters in the story. We will
compare and contrast how these characters face challenges.

2
We are going to compare
and contrast how characters respond to major events and
challenges. When you compare, you say how things are alike.

Character Responses
I’ll begin with an event: the
construction of the tall building. Then,
I’ll compare and contrast how the
sandalmaker and his wife responded to
this challenge: neither liked the lack of sunshine. I’ll write that in the middle.
But the sandalmaker was angry, while his wife found a way to solve the
problem.

Character Responses
Just as in real life, things don’t always go
as planned, and people and characters in stories face challenges. How a
character responds to a challenge tells a lot about what that character is
like. As I read, I think about how I might respond in a similar situation. What
would I do? Would I feel or act the same way?
