Determine the Central Moral
In the beginning of the story, the old sandalmaker and his wife are content with their home on a sunny street. They do not know what their fortune means, but I see that they soon find out. When a builder constructs
a tall building on the empty lot, the sun no longer shines on their corner of Asakusa. The houses in this part of the city are dark and cold, and the trees cannot bear fruit. So the sandalmaker and other townspeople go to
the judge to complain. Let’s see how they work as a community to make things better.
